A little history

The City of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures has a long, rich history.

Early years

In 1647, the first inhabitants of the seigneury granted to the west of the Cap-Rouge River settled along the St. Lawrence River and formed the core population that would later give rise to the Parish of Saint-Augustin in 1691.

Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures is named after the owner of the seigneury at the time, Paul Augustin Juchereau Sieur de Maur. In 1790, there were 1998 inhabitants. On June 21, 1845, the Parish of Saint-Augustin obtained its municipal charter.

A growing community

In 1969, the municipality joined the Communauté urbaine de Québec and created an industrial park known today as the Parc industriel François-Leclerc.

Water and sewer systems were established to promote residential development. A major highway cut across the municipality, curtailing opportunities for agriculture, but facilitating demographic development in decades to come.

The population increased from 3000 in 1971 to 18,000 in 2011.

After seeing their city merged with Québec City in 2002, a majority of citizens of Saint-Augustin voted in favour of a de-merger during a referendum held in 2004.

On January 1, 2006, Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures was officially re-established and became a member of the Greater Québec City Area.

The land territory of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures covers some 86 square kilometers and includes several heritage sites and buildings that bear witness to its rich history.

Tribute to
the Mayors

Place des maires (the mayors’ place) was established as a well-deserved tribute to list the names of some 30 mayors who dedicated part of their lives to their citizens’ well-being.

Sister cities

In 1996, with the help of its twinning association, the City of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures became a sister city to the commune of La Ferté Saint-Aubin, France. In 2008, another sister city agreement was signed with the Commune Trois-Rivières, Guadeloupe.
